Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes is perhaps the world's most famous detective. The 'Focus on Sherlock Holmes' series is devoted to bringing the books to an even wider audience.
George Cavendish has added explanations as footnotes to help those readers who are not familiar with some of the phrases used by the author and his characters -- after all the stories were written over 120 years ago. Some of the author’s phrases are still in use in modern-day British English and these are described to make the text clearer to English speakers from outside of the UK, or to those who do not speak English as a first language. Also included is some background information on places, names and terms used in the story.
It is not essential to consult the notes when reading this book, however, it is hoped that the explanations will enhance the reader’s enjoyment of this story by giving them some insights that might otherwise have been missed.
The books all feature Sidney Paget’s original drawings that were included when the stories were first published, a map showing the main locations mentioned in the stories and a timeline of the period.

The Adventure of the Speckled Band Annotated Version Focus on Sherlock Holmes Book 8 eBook Arthur Conan Doyle Sidney Paget George Cavendish Reviews
THE ADVENTURE OF THE SPECKLED BAND is arguably the scariest Sherlock Holmes story Arthur Conan Doyle ever wrote. The tale of sinister doings at Stoke Moran culminates with Holmes and Watson staging a lonely vigil in the dark awaiting whatever terror killed Julia Stoner. Magic Wagon Publishing and adapter Vincent Goodwin offer up a graphic novel version for readers 9-12 with this 2010 release, part of their 'Graphic Novel Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' series.
Although the Magic Wagon edition is only 42 pages long, it does a good job of presenting Doyle's story and the characters. I have to admit being thrown by how youthful Holmes and Watson were portrayed in some frames. They look like they're barely out of their teens but the book is intended for young readers, right!?! Goodwin used some dialogue from Doyle's original which helps give the Magic Wagon version a Victorian flavor.
I was very disappointed by how Goodwin handled Holmes and Watson's encounter with the Speckled Band. In the original story, Holmes strikes at the Speckled Band with a rod, precipitating Grimesby Roylott's death. Without giving away specifics, the Magic Wagon version of those same events is wildly different...and a great letdown. Perhaps Magic Wagon is trying to present a kindler, gentler Holmes, who knows?
In any case, THE ADVENTURE OF THE SPECKLED BAND should appeal to younger readers and serve as a fairly good introduction to the world's most famous consulting detective. Recommended.
The Adventure of the Speckled Band, Goodwin
This is the "Graphic Novel Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", similar to the old "Classics Comics" from around 1950. Vincent Goodwin wrote this adaptation, Ben Dunn is the illustrator (p.48). It has a short biography of Arthur Conan Doyle (p.46). There is a listing of Arthur Conan Doyle's works (p.47). Vincent Goodwin wrote this adaptation, Ben Dunn is the illustrator (p.48). These "Sherlock Holmes" stories were written over a century ago. They used to be part of High School English courses. How many other novels from that era are still popular? Doyle followed crime news, his stories were based on true crimes that were adapted for these short stories. The written stories are better than the movies or "graphic novels", they tell about the life of those times. The drawings of these people make them appear much younger characters compared to the books. Your Public Library has the full uncensored story in "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes".
A young lady visits Holmes early one morning. Helen Stoner lives with her stepfather. The family was once very rich but have become much poorer. Her stepfather has a medical degree and married a young widow, the mother of Julia and Helen. Her mother died in an accident eight years ago. She tells what happened to her sister Julia. One stormy night Julia screamed, then died! Now Helen was moved into her sister's room and hears the strange sounds she heard the night her sister died! Holmes and Watson will travel to the Stoke Moran house. Dr. Roylott appears to tell them to keep away. Is there a motive to prevent Helen's marriage? Holmes inspects Julia's room and noticed a strange feature. Holmes looks into Dr. Roylott's room. He has a plan for the night. Early in the morning there is a light, then a noise from the next room. Dr. Roylott perished as a result of his own plot. Holmes explained what happened.
This was the worst story with Sherlock Holmes I have ever read. Don't waste your time. Clues make no sense. Writing is good, the story is weak.
An essential late-Victorian thriller in that it combines the English countryside with the mystery of the Colonial Empire.
I purchased this item in conjunction with a unit on deductive reasoning in an eighth grade classroom. The students were able to use the clues and solve the murder.
This book was great and awesome I loved it. It had adventure action and mystery. Awesome book I recommend you to read it!
I really like this story and the ending was so rewarding to me.
